The Cost of a Bad Fit
A high salary and an impressive job title are not worth the mental toll of a toxic workplace. Unfortunately, many companies put on a great facade during the interview process, making it difficult to spot underlying cultural issues until it is too late. Learning to identify red flags before signing an offer letter can save you years of stress.
Red Flags to Watch For
Pay close attention to these warning signs during the interview process:
- High Turnover in the Role: Ask why the position is open. If the last three people in this role quit within a year, the problem is likely the company, not the candidates.
- Disrespect for Your Time: If the interviewer is repeatedly late, reschedules multiple times without apology, or sends emails at 11 PM on a Sunday, it indicates a culture that does not respect boundaries.
- Vague Answers About Culture: When you ask about company culture, listen for buzzwords. If they say "we work hard and play hard" or "we are like a family," probe deeper. These phrases are often used to justify overworking employees and poor work-life balance.
- The "Bait and Switch": If the responsibilities discussed in the interview differ wildly from the original job description, proceed with extreme caution.
Always trust your gut. If something feels off during the interview, it will likely be much worse once you are officially on the payroll.
