How to Optimize Your Resume for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)

The digital gatekeeper.

Before a human recruiter ever sees your resume, it will likely be parsed by an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). These bots scan your profile, extract your experience, and rank you against the job description. If your layout is too complex or your formatting is weird, the scanner fails, and your application disappears into a black hole.

Format simply.

We see a lot of creative resumes with double columns, progress bars for skills, and icons. Avoid them. ATS software reads left-to-right, top-to-bottom. Double columns confuse the parser, and graphics are ignored completely. Stick to a clean, single-column layout using standard fonts like Inter, Arial, or Calibri.

Keywords are not optional.

Look at the job description. If they ask for 'PHP Developer' and 'SQL Databases', make sure those exact phrases are on your resume. Do not write 'Database Specialist' if they asked for 'SQL'. The algorithm matches words literally. However, do not overstuff keywords—write naturally so a human finds it readable once it passes the bot.

Avoid headers, footers, and text boxes.

Many parsers fail to read information inside headers, footers, or floating text boxes. Keep your contact info in the main body of the document. Save your file as a standard PDF or DOCX file, and keep the naming convention simple: FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf.
