The tip of the iceberg.
When you look at job boards, you are only seeing a small fraction of the available roles. Many companies prefer to hire through referrals, internal promotions, or direct networking to avoid processing hundreds of resumes. This is the hidden job market.
Why companies hide jobs.
Hiring is expensive and time-consuming. Putting up a public job posting often results in hundreds of unqualified applications. Hiring managers would much rather ask their team: 'Do you know a good developer?' than search through portals.
How to tap into the network.
- Reach out directly: Find managers at companies you want to work for and send a polite note asking about future openings or advice.
- Leverage alumni: Connect with people who graduated from your college and ask about opportunities at their current companies.
- Engage on LinkedIn: Share interesting articles or comment on industry topics. Active profiles get noticed by recruiters looking for passive candidates.
Informational interviews.
Do not just ask for a job. Ask for fifteen minutes of their time to talk about their career path or industry trends. Often, if you build a good relationship, they will keep you in mind when a new vacancy opens up.
