Many developers started out in sales, finance, or teaching. A non-tech background is not a disadvantage; it actually gives you a unique perspective and communication skills that pure tech candidates might lack.

Identify your transferable skills.

If you worked in customer support, you understand user experience. If you worked in project management, you know how to meet deadlines. Highlight these skills on your new tech resume—they are highly valued by hiring managers.

Build a portfolio of projects.

When you do not have work experience, your portfolio is your credentials. Build 3 to 4 functional projects and host them on GitHub. Write clean code, document your setup steps, and write a detailed README file explaining your choices.

Learn in public.

Share your learning journey on LinkedIn or Twitter. Write short blog posts about bugs you fixed or concepts you learned. This builds visibility and shows recruiters your dedication and learning velocity.
