The fear of asking.

Most candidates accept the first offer they receive out of fear that asking for more will make the company retract the job offer. This is very rare. A polite, data-driven request is standard business practice.

Know your market value.

Before negotiating, research local salary averages for your experience and role. Sites like Glassdoor or Payscale are good starting points. Prepare a specific range based on facts, not just your personal expenses.

Focus on value, not needs.

Never say: 'I need more money because my rent increased.' Instead, frame it around your skills: 'Based on my experience building database integrations and managing APIs, I was hoping we could discuss an offer closer to...'

Look at the whole package.

Salary is only one component of compensation. If they cannot increase the base salary, negotiate for extra vacation days, remote work flexibility, or professional development budget.
