The Importance of the Follow-Up
You nailed the interview, gave a firm handshake, and logged off the Zoom call. Now what? The period immediately following an interview is critical, yet many candidates mishandle it. Following up shows continued interest and professionalism, but doing it wrong can make you appear desperate or disorganized.
The Perfect Timeline
Timing is everything when it comes to following up:
- Within 24 Hours: The Thank You Note. Send a brief, personalized email to every person who interviewed you. Thank them for their time, reference one specific thing you discussed to show you were listening, and reiterate your enthusiasm for the role.
- After the Deadline: The Gentle Nudge. If the recruiter said they would get back to you by Friday and it is now Monday, it is perfectly acceptable to send a brief email asking if there are any updates on the hiring timeline.
- After 2 Weeks of Silence: The Final Check-in. If you haven't heard back after your gentle nudge, send one final email. Express that you are still interested, but assume you did not get the role and continue your search.
Never call a hiring manager's personal phone number or reach out excessively on social media. Keep all follow-ups professional and concise.
