Preparation is half the battle.

We have all had bad interviews. Sometimes it is nerves, sometimes it is a mismatch, but often it is basic preparation mistakes. By identifying and avoiding these common pitfalls, you can immediately stand out from other applicants.

1. Zero company research.

If they ask: 'What do you know about our product?' and you have no answer, the interview is essentially over. Spend twenty minutes looking at their website, social media, and recent news. Understand how they make money and who their customers are.

2. The 'I have no questions' trap.

When the interviewer asks: 'Do you have any questions for us?', saying 'No' indicates lack of interest. Always ask two or three questions about the team structure, upcoming projects, or details about the work environment.

3. Badmouthing past employers.

No matter how bad your previous job was, never talk down about your former boss or colleagues. It makes you look difficult to manage. Focus on what you learned and why you are looking for new growth opportunities instead.

4. Lying about skills.

If you say you are an expert in React, expect to be asked technical questions about hooks or state management. It is always better to say, 'I haven't used that in production, but I am familiar with the concepts and eager to learn,' than to get caught lying.
